Sailing in San Francisco Bay

Intro   |   One   |   Two

John joined his workmates for a sailing race in the San Francisco Bay. Five boats set sail from Sausalito, whooshed across the Bay almost beneath the Golden Gate bridge to round the first buoy, circled Alcatraz Island, then concluded at Angel Island for lunch.

Guess whose team came in last? The risky maneuvers our trained skipper used to "get a leg up" failed repeatedly, causing us to fall far behind the others—so far behind that we actually voted whether to cheat to make up for lost time. The skipper pointed out that we could skip the Alcatraz loop entirely; the other boats were already hidden behind the island and wouldn't notice initially.

There was a growing majority onboard in favor of the idea until we decided we were enjoying the sea and saw no reason to rush. We would lose with style. So around Alcatraz we went, drawing up last into tiny Angel Island Bay.

After an ample lunch of lobster, frisbee and ball, we all boarded the Glory Days, a large sailboat which carried us back beneath the Golden Gate bridge to return to lovely Sausalito for delicious margueritas.
