General MIDI Instruments

General MIDI is a music-industry standard allowing electronic instruments and peripherals to communicate. Among the many things these devices can communicate about is which instrument to play.

General MIDI Instruments lets you tell your Macintosh or MIDI synthesizer which of the many available instruments to use. You can then play throughout the range of that instrument and hear the result.

To play the instrument, click and drag in the main window. You'll see and hear the corresponding pitch.

You can also play using your Macintosh keyboard:

• spacebar—repeat current note
• up/down—half-step
• page up/down—octave
• home/end—range extremes
